High progesterone levels have a negative feedback effect on the hypothalamus, decreasing GnRH production. This lowers FSH and LH levels. Now the corpus luteum isn't stimulated any more, and it dies. This causes the progesterone levels to decrease, and as a result the uterine lining dies and is shed in menstruation. Now the hypothalamus will detect that the levels of sex hormones are too low. |
