This is the selection period, when a few follicles are SELECTED to continue developing and produce eggs.

The follicles that succeed in developing produce more and more estrogen as they grow, so even though the woman's hypothalamus and pituitary are not stimulating her follicles very much, her estrogen levels continue to increase.

During this period, the high estrogen levels cause the woman's uterine lining to grow. The cells divide and new blood vessels grow into the lining, making it thicker.

And after a while, this continuing estrogen starts to have a surprising effect; it turns GnRH secretion by the hypothalamus back on again.
