You should remember prostaglandins as the alarm substances produced by damaged cells.

They are strong vasodilators; when the kidneys are damaged or under stress, the prostaglandins they release make the arterioles dilate and restore the blood flow the kidneys need.

This is one reason that drugs like aspirin, which interfere with prostaglandin formation, can be dangerous to the kidneys.
