When you eat or drink different things, your kidney has to deal with them.

Sometimes it has to get rid of a load of salt, or excrete excess water, or adjust ion levels to keep your blood normal.

This means that you have to adjust your kidney's activity, based on the composition of your blood.

The kidney has to measure the amount of blood coming in and the blood's composition; then it has to do whatever is necessary to return the blood to normal.
