Transplanted tissues need to match because your body defends itself against cells that it thinks are foreign.

The immune system creates special proteins called antibodies to kill foreign cells. These proteins do their job by attaching to proteins on the surface of the foreign cells. Then they attract white blood cells to eat the foreign cells, or activate other poisons to break them apart.
